Gaining access to tape data is something of a dark art. Many variables exist from the tension of the tape to the level of degradation. Let’s give you an example sometimes a tape recorded on a particular drive with a slight error can only be read on a drive that can replicate the error. Put simply most of the time it’s not a plug and play, copy and paste solution. This requires a blend off experience, determination and knowledge.
Digital magnetic backup tapes have been around since the 1970’s and technology has marched along at quite a pace since then. The complexity of our solutions can be summed up by the following problems:
